Have you considered studying abroad for either a short field-trip, a semester, year, or even a whole degree program? Here are a few great reasons why you should definitely add studying abroad to your ’to do’ list.

Studying abroad looks great on your resume

In today’s super competitive working environment, you need to stand out from the crowd when applying for that dream job.  Most companies operate in a global environment, and are looking for future employees with cross-cultural understanding and knowledge. Skills learned abroad include a better understanding of cultural differences, easier adaptation to new environments, and enhanced life skills, including independence and problem-solving.

It’s not as expensive as you think

There’s a perception out there that studying abroad costs an arm and a leg, and you can’t afford it. Think again!  Did you know that some countries offer free or very affordable study options? Finland, for example, offers very affordable university programs to all students (including international). Many other countries (Poland, Hungary, Mexico, for example) offer top notch education with competitive rates, and with economical living costs.

Also, many universities offer academic and sports scholarships to eligible students, and there is a wide range of government and provincial financial aid schemes available as well.  Do your homework and find out how you can save!

Education is global – many universities worldwide now offer programs in English

Education has become truly global in the past few years, and many universities now offer English-taught undergraduate and graduate degree programs. In Finland, for example, around 40 universities offer programs in English, with more than 600 subjects to choose from. Universities in the Netherlands offer over 2000 English-taught degree programs!  Think out of the box and consider a non-English speaking country – it’s a great opportunity to learn another language while you study in English – and another great addition to your resume.

Finish your degree quicker!

Degree programs are sometimes shorter abroad, so it may be cheaper to study abroad than to study in your own country when you consider that you are paying for tuition and accommodation for less time.  For example, in most of the UK, undergraduate degrees are generally three years and some masters’ degrees are one year – so you pay for one less year of accommodation and tuition, and you get to start earning a year sooner!

Make friends, see the world!

One of the coolest things about the ‘study abroad’ concept is the ‘abroad’ bit of course.  It’s an opportunity to travel, see the world, make friends with people from other countries, and experience different cultures. If you decide to study anywhere in Europe, you’re a hop, skip and a jump away from other countries.  You have a plethora of cultures, cuisine, languages, landscapes and world-famous cities right on your doorstep.  Cheap flights and inter-city trains make travelling easy.
