meeting with the students
The Nursing students have arrived to Finland and we organized a warm welcome service. We met some of the students at the Helsinki-Vantaa airport. We offered help with how to buy tickets for onward journeys and how to reach their accommodation. The students could also ask any practical questions they had in mind. The orientation for nursing students has started at Tampere University of Applied Sciences and the nursing classes will start on 24th January.
We met with students at Tampere University of Applied Sciences’ main campus today. Once we arrived, we noticed that the students were prepared for the Finnish winter with serious winter gear. The whole meeting was fascinating and enjoyable since the students were active, passionate and engaging in discussion. Some of the students already landed on part-time jobs! The Students’ Union of TAMK arranged a Kahoot trivia quiz about Finland, which was a joyful activity for the students.
We gave some tips of what to do and experience here in Tampere. Especially now when the Covid19-situation is limiting some options of activities. We suggested that during this winter, the students could go skating at Sorsapuisto or take a hike at Niihaman luontopolku. During the summer, it is obviously lot more pleasant to spend time outside and that is why we suggested that the students could visit Särkänniemi amusement park or Tönö Café in Eteläpuisto, near the city centre. Majority of the students had already rode the ‘’Ratikka’’ tram, which is new in Tampere.
What happens in the orientation?
In the first week of orientation, the students have been given some practical information about Tampere, Finland, using transportation, registering with the Students’ Union TAMKO, Tampere University of Applied Sciences in whole and student services such as using the libraries. Tutors from Tampere University of Applied Sciences have been guiding the students with some general information and skills such as computer skills. Tutors have given the students a campus tour and took them to the city centre, which must have been an exciting experience.
During the second week of orientation the students will go through practicalities such as working in Finland and what to expect from it, opening bank accounts and information about classes starting next week and the schedule.
