A government report has revealed some startling numbers. Finland is preparing to train 31,000 new practical nurses in Finland by 2040 to ensure high-quality care for its aging population.
That’s not all. Finland needs about 20,000 more nurses, both practical and registered, by the end of this decade—just a few years away.
A Little Throwback: Practical Nurse in Finland
In 2019, Finland had around 71,000 practical nurses. In order to meet the demands of its aging population, this number has to increase dramatically. It isn’t just a matter of adding a few extra staff members. It’s a huge increase, requiring significant planning and action.
Why is this happening? One of the main reasons is that Finland’s population is getting older. As people age, they tend to need more healthcare, including nursing care.
This growing need presents a challenge for Finland’s healthcare system. Another factor is Finland’s low birth rate. For the third year in a row, it’s the lowest ever recorded. This means fewer young people are available to work and help support the increasing number of older people.
Many People are Moving to Finland
Interestingly, despite the low birth rate, Finland’s population has actually grown. This growth is primarily due to immigration. More people are moving to Finland than are leaving. While this helps the overall population numbers, it also increases the demand for healthcare services, including nursing care.
One article also points out that Finnish doctors and nurses are already feeling overworked and burned out. They’re struggling to keep up with their demanding schedules. This situation makes it even more urgent to recruit and train more nurses.
If current healthcare professionals are overworked, they may not be able to provide the best possible care, and it becomes harder to retain them in the profession.
