Overview

The University of Limerick (UL) is a young and enterprising Irish university, offering undergraduate and graduate programs in Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences, Education, Science and Engineering. The university was founded in 1972, with the mission to “build on the expertise of scholars in creating, harnessing, and imparting knowledge for the benefit of our students and the enrichment of our community”.

The university was awarded prestigious 5-star rankings for graduate employability, innovation and knowledge transfer, teaching, engagement, internationalization, and infrastructure by QS Stars independent assessors.

The University is recognised as possessing one of the most spectacular and environmentally sympathetic third-level campuses in the world.

The University of Limerick’s campus has plenty of sports and cultural facilities, such as Ireland’s first Olympic-size swimming pool, an indoor sports arena, a boathouse with a state-of-the-art indoor rowing tank, the 1,100-seat University Concert Hall, the Irish Chamber Orchestra Building, the Irish World Academy and plenty of art collection and sculptures (i.e the National Self-Portrait Collection of Ireland and the Water Colour Society of Ireland Collection).

The campus is located 5 km from Limerick city and 20km from Shannon International Airport.

Nexus Innovation Centre is located at the university, which supports spin-out activity in the region, and is central to the UL Enterprise Corridor which hosts leading R&D companies such as Johnson & Johnson. Adjacent to the University is the National Technology Park (NTP), Ireland’s first science/technology park (263 hectares), which is home to over 80 organizations employing over 3,000 people.

The concept of Cooperative Education in Ireland was developed and implemented by the University of Limerick, which helped more than 2,000 students to find paid and semi-paid work placements annually, of which 30% of these as international placements. Thanks to this, students graduating from UL has many opportunities to find work, with a graduate employment rate of 15% higher than the national average.

With strong links to business and industry, UL excels at translational research which aims to accelerate the practical application of academic research to benefit society. UL houses some of the most innovative and successful research centers in Ireland. The Nexus Innovation Centre is a growing community of international researchers and entrepreneurs which supports new businesses and the creation of jobs.

The University of Limerick offers a wide range of postgraduate programs in Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, Education and Health Sciences, Business, Science, and Engineering.

Admission criteria

The application process is fast and simple. The students are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis which means that if you meet the minimum criteria, you can get your acceptance within a month.  The application period can close earlier, so we recommend you apply as soon as possible.

    Make sure you have all the following documents ready when you fill out the application form.

    Educational background

    Applicants who have completed a qualification outside EU must submit one of the following documents to Edunation:

    • Copy of the final/official higher secondary school certificate or vocational qualification which gives eligibility for higher education studies in your own country
    • International Baccalaureate Diploma (IB) – 28 or higher
    • A-Level (+GCSE O Level) – BBC or above

    You must submit also a Transcript of Records. All documents must be certified/notarized copies and translated into English.

    Language requirements

    Proof of English proficiency is required for all degrees at the University of Limerick. You will need to take at least one of these tests with the following scores:

    • IELTS: Overall 6.5 or above with no less than 6.0 in any component
    • IB TOFEL: 90 or above with no band less than 20
    • TOEFL: 580 (paper-based) or above
    • (ETAPP) English Test for Academic and Professional Purposes: Grade C1 or above
    • GSE ‘0’ Level English Language /GCSE English Language: Grade C or above
    • University of Cambridge ESOL Certificate of Proficiency in English: Grade C
    • Certificate in Advanced English: Grade A
    • PTE Academic: A minimum score of 61, with no section score below 59
    • GCE Examinations Boards: Grade C
    • Duolingo: 110 (Only for September 2021: UL has approved the use of the Duolingo English Test (DET) as a temporary measure for the 2021/2 intake (due to test center closures). An interview may be required in conjunction with this for certain programs.)

Tuition Fees

The tuition fees vary depending on the degree program and faculty. The tuition fees per academic year start from 10 000€ up to 16 000€. 6000€ (over 4 years) for 8.0 or above entry score

Master’s degree

PG Science & Engineering Scholarships:

  • €2,000 for 7.50 entry score

  • €1,500 for 7.50 entry score
