Overview
In the Bachelor in Industrial Design at LAB University of Applied Sciences, students learn the creative methods of the design of products and user interfaces.
At the center of the design studies of LAB, sustainability and user-centered design are at the core of the program. Students familiarise themselves with the manufacturability and business aspects of design work.
As an example, a student can specialize in the design of new types of transportation and vehicles combined with the development of related business models. Industrial Design offers a world of possibilities. The program places a strong emphasis on the hallmark skills of designers, such as visualization and modeling. State-of-the-art facilities at the Lahti campus ensure that students can utilize a multitude of methods and modern equipment in their design work.
As studies advance, more and more of the learning will take place in real-life assignments and projects. Cooperation with local and international businesses ensures that the content of the studies is up to date and the professional networking possibilities are outstanding. This has proven to be a valuable tool towards a running start to a successful career.
Graduates work as designers of products, product-related services and user interfaces in different businesses and the manufacturing industry. They can be employed at design and engineering companies. Industrial designers are well employed both in Finland and internationally, many as entrepreneurs.

In the Bachelor’s Degree Programme in Industrial Design, students familiarise themselves with the manufacturability and business aspects of design work.
For example, a student can specialize in the sustainable and user-centric design of
- new types of transportation and vehicles combined with the development of related business models
- industrially produced products such as home appliances, tools and other equipment
- specialized vehicles such as construction machinery, mining, forestry etc.
- other machinery and industrial production tools
- products that combine a digital service and interfaces with physical devices.
The program is divided into common core competence and complementary competence studies.
- The core competence studies equip you for a range of professional roles as a designer.
- The complementary competence studies allow you to extend your skills and specialize in your areas of interest. The complementary competence studies are realized in close relationship with the professional field in business cooperation and other real-life projects.
The bachelor’s degree program includes a 15-ECTS thesis. This can either be a research-based project or a so-called functional thesis project. The thesis project aims to broaden and deepen your professional expertise and knowledge and provide you with the expertise needed to operate in development tasks in your field. The thesis project improves your information retrieval and problem-solving skills.
Duration and scope of studies: 4 years, 240 ECTS credits, including 30 credits of work placement.
After earning the degree, you can apply for work in private sector businesses as well as public sector organizations that require an applicable university degree.
Graduates work as designers of products, product-related services and user interfaces in different businesses and the manufacturing industry. They can be employed at design and engineering companies.
Some of our alumni are Chief Design Officers at large companies, yacht designers, Creative Directors and other design influencers of well-known domestic and international brands. Industrial designers are well employed both in Finland and internationally, many as entrepreneurs.
