Bachelor of Health Care in Nursing (TOP-UP)

The program aims to develop highly competent nursing professionals capable of applying evidence-based practices in diverse health care settings. Students enhance their clinical and research skills while integrating Finnish language proficiency into their professional practice. The curriculum also fosters international and multicultural collaboration, ensuring graduates are well-prepared to work in both local and global health care environments. Ultimately, the program seeks to empower students to confidently pursue advanced nursing roles, contribute to health care innovation, and achieve professional recognition in Finland and beyond.

The degree comprises 210 ECTS credits and includes advanced nursing studies, clinical practice, research and development projects, Finnish language courses, and a Bachelor’s thesis written in English. Students begin in English and gradually incorporate Finnish into their studies, supported by individual study plans that recognize prior learning.

Learning is primarily conducted through on-campus teaching, simulation hospital training, and practical skills workshops, complemented by online independent study. Clinical practice follows real work hours, including shifts, offering hands-on experience across hospitals, clinics, home care, and rehabilitation centers. Finnish language instruction is integrated throughout, ranging from beginner to professional levels, and supported by language clinics for developing workplace communication skills. Students also have opportunities to engage in innovation projects and collaborative research within Metropolia’s health and wellbeing hub.

Graduates may find employment in primary health care or in specialized nursing units within public or private health care. You might work in a hospital ward, a clinic, home care, various rehabilitation and senior centers, or a health center. Beyond traditional nursing roles, the degree also enables graduates to work as experts, consultants, in non-profit organizations, or in international duties.

The program provides EU-recognized nursing qualifications, allowing graduates to pursue careers abroad. Graduates must also be sufficiently proficient in Finnish to work as a nurse in Finland. Once this requirement is met, they can apply to Valvira, the National Supervisory Authority for Welfare and Health, for professional registration and the right to practice as a licensed nurse in Finland.

By completing this degree, students gain a combination of advanced nursing skills, practical clinical experience, and international competence, equipping them to excel in a wide variety of challenging and rewarding health care environments both in Finland and abroad.
