The Nursing Degree Program is a blend of theoretical knowledge and practical application, providing you with a holistic education. The curriculum is structured as follows:

  • Language Development: From the outset, Finnish language training is integrated into your studies. Courses initially conducted in English gradually shift to Finnish, allowing you to develop your language skills progressively. • Core Nursing Studies: Theoretical nursing studies form the backbone of the program, covering essential topics such as anatomy, physiology, nursing ethics, and patient care. These studies provide a solid foundation in nursing principles and practices.
  • Multidisciplinary Studies: You will engage in multidisciplinary studies that emphasize intercultural communication and the ability to operate within the diverse environments of the Finnish healthcare system. These courses are designed to broaden your perspective and enhance your ability to work in multi-professional teams.
  • Practical Training: Practical training is a critical component of the program, allowing you to apply your theoretical knowledge in real-world healthcare settings. Through simulation learning, independent practice, and collaborative exercises, you will develop the hands-on skills necessary to succeed as a nurse.
  • Final Project: The program culminates in a final project, where you will have the opportunity to demonstrate your competence and innovation in addressing a relevant healthcare issue. This project will showcase your ability to integrate your learning and contribute to the advancement of nursing practice.

The degree program in Nursing taught by Metropolia gives students the necessary skills to practice nursing in Finland upon graduation. When graduating, you must submit a licensing application to Valvira, the National Supervisory Agency for Welfare and Health. Valvira gives the license to all health professionals in Finland, including Finns.

The licensing application should include a certificate demonstrating that the candidate knows Finnish at the required level in order to work with Finnish clients.

The required level of Finnish is attained if the student gets skill level 3 in the National Certificate of Language Proficiency. Skill level 3 is approximately the same as B1 level Finnish.

Vaccinations

Vaccinations are checked by the Student Health Service at the start of your studies. If you are missing some of the required vaccinations, they can also be administered in Finland.

Criminal record

Criminal record is needed when you work with underage patients (under 18 years old). First traineeship with underage patients will be organized during the second year, so you don’t need to present the record before that.

The record cannot be older than 6 months so we recommend that you won’t order the criminal record report before you arrive in Finland.
