Metropolia’s Master program is targeted for you who is in working life, wishing to become a specialist in Information Technology. Studies are designed and executed in such a way that if you are working full-time, you can participate. The requirement for participation is a bachelor level degree in engineering and at least two years of working life experience.
The studies enable you to follow the professional development of the ICT field, both from the applied research and practical viewpoints. Lifelong learning is a must in all professional tasks and ICT is one of the fastest developing technical fields.

Metropolia’s aim is to educate you to work in advanced specialist tasks in the field of ICT, focusing on two fields: Networking and Services, and Medical Technology. The studies enable you to follow the professional development of the field, both from the applied research and practical viewpoints. Continuous learning is a must in all professional tasks and ICT is one of the fastest developing technology fields.
The program is conducted in English to allow the improvement of your communication skills.
Your Master’s degree will directly refer to your real-life project and address both your company’s and your personal interest. The teaching is aimed at professionals both with an industry and a public sector background.
The degree consists of Professional Studies (30 ECTS credits) and a Master’s thesis project (30 ECTS credits). Studies consist of lectures, laboratory work, workshops, assignments, and projects as well as independent studying. The professional studies are offered at the Karamalmi campus at Espoo.
The program is divided into two fields of specialization (learning paths): Networking and Services, and Medical Technology.
Networking and Services
In the first study year, you will undertake a course in Research Methods and Skills and attend a seminar on Trends in ICT, and complete 20 ECTS from our course offerings for professional studies.
The Research Methods and Skills course provides you the required knowledge to prepare and facilitate a high quality Master’s thesis. The lectures on Trends in ICT -course are given by professionals from highly esteemed companies in the field of ICT and will provide you with a good understanding of the current status of the business and the challenges the industry is facing.
The professional courses gives a broad and up-to-date knowledge on this fast developing field of networked applications. Cyber Security gives an insight into existing and emerging technologies and challenges faced in this increasingly important field. The IT Project Management provides understanding on how to conduct a successful IT project from business, technical and ethical point of view. The Internet of Things (IoT) course extends this knowledge into internetworking of devices to collect and exchange data to form “the infrastructure of the information society”. The Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning course provides students with an overview of recent developments in AI with emphasis on machine learning and reinforcement learning.
Medical Technology
Medical technology is steadily growing field of technology in Finland. Medical Technology Professional studies focus on medical devices including software. Studies are tailored for professionals working in business, industry and public sector, who want to deepen their knowledge, skills and competences in medical technology to capture new career opportunities for the future. Studies enable novel career prospects for professionals, with previous degree for example from ICT, automation, electronics or electrical engineering.
The Medical Technology Professional studies gives a focused and up-to-date knowledge and skills related to medical devices.
- Medical Devices and Environments of Use course focuses on medical devices including software, clinical environments where medical devices are used, and requirements that the context of use gives to medical devices.
- Regulations and Standards course gives the latest information related to medical device regulation and essential standards used to fulfill the requirements originated from the regulation.
- Safety Related Usability course offers tools for improving usability and taking safety of use into account when developing medical devices.
Medical Device Life Cycle course will provide the understanding of medical device life cycle that is highly dependent on strict requirements for safety, performance and suitability to intended purpose of use. - Research Methods and Skills course provide the required knowledge to prepare and facilitate a high-quality Master’s thesis.
After graduating with a Master of Engineering Degree in Information Technology, you may work in advanced specialist tasks in international engineering surroundings of ICT and medical technology industries. In some sectors, a Master’s degree is often a prerequisite for management positions.
