Overview
Urgent demand for new energy sources and scarce natural resources, the pressure of population as well as increasing needs for waste management, are major challenges for nations and municipalities all over the world. Environmental issues are nowadays considered a megatrend and business activities in connection to energy and the environment are developing rapidly. To meet these challenges industrial companies, authorities and organisations need engineers that can grasp their assignments in a holistic way. These engineers need to have the required technical competence as well as a capability to consider the economical, legislative and social aspects.

The programme in Energy Technology is designed to provide the students with a comprehensive competence in environmental and energy-related issues that are relevant especially for industrial companies, but also for authorities and organisations. The main learning objectives for the education program are broad knowledge in energy technology with a focus on energy sources, sustainable development and energy management. The broad base described above enables the engineers to start their career in many different positions and the holistic view provides tools for communicating and cooperating with many different kinds of specialists in an international context.
The contents of the studies are:
- Environmental Engineering
- Process Technology
- Energy Control Engineering
- Energy Design and Optimization
- Electrical Energy Systems
- Mechanical Energy Transmission Systems
The aim of the studies is to provide broad-based and versatile technical knowledge in the field of Energy and Environmental Technology as well as Sustainable Development. This includes the ability to creatively solve technical problems, work in project teams as well as communicate and collaborate. The student also gets a basic insight into Project and Energy Management. Subjects covered include Energy Production and Control, Resource and Waste Management, as well as System and Life-Cycle Analysis. The working methods include case studies, projects and teamwork, all of which aim at improving communication, argumentation and cooperation skills. The approach provides a good basis for future industrial project work.
Common career choices after graduation from Energy Technology include industrial or consultative work as a project engineer in the fields of energy and environmental technology, work with environmental and quality systems, as well as recycling and optimization of the use of raw materials and energy. Other fields of work include research and development within the environmental and energy fields.
The engineers are often developers, managers, project engineers or responsible for communication and authority contacts concerning environmental issues. Many engineers are consultants, supporting industrial companies in environmental issues or cooperating in different projects concerning for instance renewable energy production or waste management. You can also become a governmental or local official or find a challenging job in associations or international organizations.
The Vaasa region hosts the biggest concentration of energy-related business activities in Northern European countries, including many international companies, https://www.vaasa.fi/en/energyvaasa/. The region is also a pioneer in waste management.
