Overview

The Bachelor of Engineering in Information and Communications Technology, Cyber-Physical Systems at Turku University of Applied Sciences is a multidisciplinary and work-life oriented programme. It combines theoretical studies with professional skills to prepare students for the needs of working life, both now and in the future.

The programme focuses on the intersection of technology and the real world, where intelligent systems, autonomous devices, and modern information systems operate. It addresses key questions such as how self-driving cars make safe decisions, how critical infrastructures are protected from cyber threats, and how smart and sustainable systems are built.

Cybersecurity and intelligent systems are central themes, reflecting the growing need for experts who can design, secure, and monitor complex digital and physical environments.

The programme aims to develop professionals who understand intelligent systems and the protection of critical infrastructure. Students gain knowledge in AI security and reliability, along with the ability to apply this understanding in practical environments.

A key objective is to prepare students to see the “big picture” — combining technical expertise with problem-solving skills, collaboration, and awareness of real-world applications. Through industry collaboration and laboratory work, students develop hands-on skills in testing and implementing solutions that are relevant to current industry needs.

Graduates are trained to become highly skilled experts in devices and networks, capable of developing and securing intelligent systems.

The degree consists of 240 ECTS credits completed over 4 years. It includes:

  • Basic and Professional studies (180 ECTS)
  • Optional studies (15 ECTS)
  • Practical training (30 ECTS)
  • Bachelor’s thesis project (15 ECTS)

During the studies, students can choose a specialisation based on their interests and career goals. The available specialisations are:

Dependable Devices
Focuses on how devices are built and how they function reliably even in demanding conditions. It includes robotics, future vehicles, and AI integration in device systems, preparing students for roles in industrial product development and intelligent device solutions.

Networks and Cybersecurity
Focuses on protecting data networks and information systems, including understanding cyberattacks and developing skills to detect and counter them. It prepares students to become cybersecurity experts with strong technical and analytical abilities.

Students develop knowledge from both tracks and learn to work in international teams regardless of their specialisation.

Graduates of the programme are prepared for roles in both devices and cybersecurity within the ICT field. Typical positions include Cyber Security Specialist, Hardware Engineer, Network Specialist, Project Manager, Embedded System Developer, and R&D Engineer.

The programme equips graduates with the ability to work in developing and securing intelligent systems, making them valuable professionals in industries focused on technology, cybersecurity, and digital infrastructure.
