Overview

The Bachelor of Engineering in Information and Communications Technology, with a focus on Data Engineering and AI at Turku University of Applied Sciences, is a work-life-oriented programme that combines theoretical studies with practical professional skills. The programme reflects the needs of modern and future working life, where data and artificial intelligence play a central role in everyday technologies.

You will explore how systems such as streaming platforms, smart devices, and social media feeds rely on data and AI. Throughout the studies, you will develop skills in building AI systems, training machine learning models, and designing cloud-based data pipelines. The programme supports your development from a technology user into a skilled data professional.

The main objective of the programme is to provide a comprehensive understanding of the entire data pipeline. This includes how data is collected, processed, and stored, how it is analysed, and how it is applied in intelligent systems and decision-making processes.

The studies progress from basic knowledge to more advanced professional expertise. Projects and the bachelor’s thesis play an important role in combining theory with practical application. Upon graduation, students are expected to have strong technical competence as well as a clear professional identity.

The programme also aims to develop graduates who can see the “big picture” in real-world contexts. This includes combining technical skills with problem-solving abilities, collaboration, and an understanding of practical industry needs. Graduates are prepared to work as highly skilled professionals in data engineering and AI-related fields, including health technology solutions.

The programme consists of 240 ECTS credits and takes approximately 4 years to complete.

It is structured as follows:

  • Basic and Professional Studies: 180 ECTS
  • Optional Studies: 15 ECTS
  • Practical Training: 30 ECTS
  • Bachelor’s Thesis Project: 15 ECTS

During the studies, students can choose a specialisation based on their interests and career goals. The available specialisations are:

Data Engineering

Focuses on understanding the entire data pipeline, from how large volumes of data are collected and refined into usable information to how cloud-based data pipelines are designed and developed. It prepares students to work with modern data systems that support AI solutions and data-driven decision-making.

AI Development

Focuses on machine learning, neural networks, and building self-learning systems. It is suited for students interested in the “brain” behind artificial intelligence and developing advanced AI solutions for real-world applications.

Health Tech

Focuses on creating digital solutions for healthcare and wellness. It includes the safety and usability of medical technologies and develops skills for building innovations that meet real user and market needs in the health technology sector.

Students develop a strong foundation in data engineering and AI while gaining the ability to apply their skills in different professional contexts depending on their chosen focus area.

Graduates of the programme are prepared for a wide range of roles in the data and AI field. Typical positions include Data Engineer, Data Analyst, Data Scientist, Data Manager, AI Developer, AI Engineer, Project Manager, and Software Engineer.

Depending on the chosen specialisation, graduates may also work in areas such as advanced AI system development, cloud-based data engineering, or health technology innovation, particularly in digital healthcare and wellness sectors.
