SAMK is a higher education institution with an emphasis on entrepreneurship. At SAMK, all students have to take compulsory entrepreneurship studies. They will learn the meaning of intrapreneurship in the employment market and how entrepreneurial attitude promotes employment. Students can develop their entrepreneurial skills in different projects and try their hands on running their own business. There are three different environments for entrepreneurship at SAMK.

1. Entrepreneurial action

Intrapreneurship and entrepreneurship, first of all, have been defined as important professional skills in the curricula. Each student is given a chance to develop entrepreneurial skills in learning environments which support entrepreneurial activities.

An example of entrepreneurial action is SAMK’s Apparaatti that works as a bridge between students and companies. Apparaatti refines the product and service ideas into complex, innovative activities with the talent of students. The aim of Apparaatti is to bring students closer to working life, increasing their employability after graduation.

2. Enterprise activities

Next, in the Enterprise Accelerator, developing your own business idea, working as an entrepreneur and developing your enterprise are included in the degree studies. In the Enterprise Accelerator, students can complete up to third of their studies while developing their own business idea and enterprise.

The Enterprise Accelerator is for any students, and students can take part in at any stage of their studies. In its 20 years of operation, the Enterprise Accelerator has produced 296 enterprises! Most noteworthy is that it is a nationally recognized program and has been rewarded by the Finnish National Agency of Education.

The Enterprise Accelerator focuses on

  • The mentors’ support and advice
  • Study performances related to one’s own enterprise
  • Personal study plan
  • Making use of networks and support from RDI activities
  • Business succession

3. Innovation activities

Furthermore, SAMK aims at transferring the results of RDI activities to its partners and interest groups as effectively as possible. They invest in start-up companies and if necessary provide them with research competence.

SAMK works in close co-operation with a network of business angels from Satakunta and Finland (FiBAN) to support start-up companies. Co-operation focuses on arranging pitching events, and the board of SAMK has decided to invest a large sum of money in start-up enterprises in Satakunta and in Finland.

These activities are supported by 20 accomplished entrepreneurs in Satakunta. They offer their expertise and experience in entrepreneurship, their vision and practical skills for the budding entrepreneurs. As a result, through this community of entrepreneurs, SAMK’s students are provided with key components of being successful entrepreneurs.
