Software development and digitalization are an integral part of the modern society, shaping virtually everything from the objects around us to the ways in which we communicate.
The Master’s Program in Software Engineering and Digital Transformation focuses on developing advanced knowledge and expertise for the design and development of software and digital services and the digital transformation of business processes.
The program addresses the application of engineering principles of software and systems development, including design methodologies, business process and service modeling and re-engineering, operation principles, and maintenance and quality assurance approaches.
Digital transformation in this context refers to the change associated with the application of the software engineering body of knowledge for the transformation and modernization of digital assets of business and industry domains.
You can specialize in one of the two areas – Software Engineering or Digital Transformation.
The Software Engineering
This specialization builds upon the Bachelor’s Program in Software Engineering and aims at developing professional skills in this discipline as well as providing opportunities for students to engage in and develop research abilities.
From a practical point of view, this specialization prepares students for specialist roles or project and team leader positions.
The Digital Transformation
This specialization aims at building software and service design and redesign, business process re-engineering and digitalization expertise for modern businesses, and industry workflow digitaliszation.
It also offers a fresh start also for those who do not have a bachelor’s degree in computer science or related disciplines (IT/IS or Software Engineering) and aims at developing professional skills in this discipline as well as providing opportunities for the students to engage in research and develop their research abilities.

After having completed the Master’s program you will have a solid foundation in information technology.

- be able to recognise problems in software development and improve technical, project management and organisational processes
The program includes core studies, specialization studies, minor studies, language studies and elective studies.
Core studies (30 ECTS credits) include courses on software engineering models and methods, requirements engineering, user experience design, project management, and research methods.
Specialization studies (24 ECTS credits) are available in Software Engineering and Digital Transformation.
SOFTWARE ENGINEERING includes studies on topics such as Software as a Service: architectures and engineering, data-intensive software systems, software maintenance, and quality assurance in software development.
DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION includes studies on topics such as digital business process modeling, the impact and benefits of digitalization, digital business platforms, and business intelligence.
Minor studies (24 ECTS credits) consist of mandatory, 18 ECTS credits, and elective, 6 ECTS credits, studies. Mandatory studies include courses on Requirements engineering, Software engineering models, and Method and software quality assurance, each 6 ECTS credits.

- Digital business process modeling
- Impact and effects of digital business
- Digital business platforms
- Fundamentals of game development
- Software business development
Elective studies (12 ECTS credits) can be selected from any disciplines at LUT.
The Master’s thesis and seminar, 30 ECTS credits, is a part of specialization studies. The thesis is an advanced research project which requires approximately six months of full-time work. It is completed during the fourth semester of the degree program.
Double degree studies for students from partner universities
Students from partner universities are able to study as a double degree student at LUT.

Students admitted to the double degree program receive a degree certificate from two universities after they have fulfilled the degree requirements of both universities.
