In today’s society, resources are becoming scarce and the environmental impact of manufacturing processes is a matter of growing concern. It is important to develop technology which is not harmful to the environment, to use natural resources rationally, and to minimize process waste.

Chemical engineering is a highly interdisciplinary field concerned with diverse materials and processes. It covers many scientific and technological areas essential for human well-being, a clean environment and the sustainable use of natural resources.

Water treatment is inadequate in many parts of the world. Instead of focusing on end-of-pipe treatment for pollution prevention, we should shift towards optimal resource utilization and enhanced water recycling. Consequently, it is obvious that novel and sustainable materials and technologies for water treatment are needed.

The master’s program in Chemical Engineering and Water Treatment allows you to choose specialization either in Chemical Engineering or in Water Treatment.

Specialization

  • Chemical Engineering

    Chemical Engineering specialization gives you the basic skills necessary in modern chemical and process industry.

    During your studies, you will be able to create new sustainable solutions as a response to major global challenges. You will learn to create, design, develop and promote innovations and new technology and to work in an international team.

  • Water Treatment

    Water Treatment specialization is based on existing and future water treatment challenges. Novel and advanced technologies are at the core of the studies, and course contents are planned based on the industrial and municipal requirements as well as the most recent scientific discoveries.

    During your studies, you will learn how waters are purified not only efficiently but also in a sustainable and economical manner. You will obtain knowledge and skills to solve water-related challenges in the future.

  • Objectives

    You will become a competent professional in the rapidly developing, multidisciplinary area of water and the environmental protection.

    Graduates of the Chemical Engineering specialization will be able to:

    • have a solid theoretical background in core areas of chemical engineering;
    • have strong engineering analysis and problem solving skills;
    • have practical engineering skills, such as the ability to make approximations and decisions under uncertainty;
    • have the courage to create innovations and new technical solutions;
    • possess project work and communication skills needed in the modern working environment.

     

    Graduates of the Water Treatment specialization will be able to:

    • have a comprehensive understanding of the BAT and future water treatment technologies, covering conventional water purification, advanced oxidation, and various separation methods;
    • have a broad knowledge of sustainable water treatment and water reuse as well as recovering valuable compounds from the treated water (wastewater, seawater);
    • be able to demonstrate a broad knowledge of process and environmental analytics and monitoring;
    • be able to demonstrate a critical understanding of relevant theories and techniques, problem-solving skills, and an ability to use knowledge, equipment and tools independently for the design and development of practical water treatment applications.
  • Structure

    The program includes core studies and specialization studies.

    Core studies include an introduction course to M.Sc. studies and a course on research methodology.

    Specialization studies are available in Chemical Engineering and Water Treatment. You will specialize in one of these two fields:

    • Chemical Engineering specialization includes studies on bio refineries, modelling of unit operations, process intensification, product design.
    • Water Treatment specialization  includes studies on solution chemistry, membrane technology, biological waste water treatment, solid liquid separation.
  • Career opportunities

    During your studies at LUT, you will acquire the knowledge and practical skills to work in different fields of the process industry, chemical companies, equipment manufacturers; you will learn the latest information about the chemical engineering approach to water treatment.

    Chemical Engineering specialization:

    • You may find employment in the chemical, biomass refining, food processing or metallurgical industries.
    • Other prospective positions include overseeing the construction of new plants, assessing safety and environmental issues, supervising plant operations, etc.

     

    Water Treatment specialization:

    • You may find employment in the chemical and process industry (users of pure water) as well as technology companies focusing on water purification;
    • municipalities: water treatment plants;
    • research institutes: development of new water treatment processes and technology, novel separation and purification materials, water quality monitoring methods.
