Energy is the defining challenge of the 21st century. Finding solutions to important global challenges to help achieve an affordable, sustainable and clean supply of global energy is a core task for LUT.

In the program, you will deepen your knowledge, skills and competences in energy technology, e.g. energy economics, environmental impacts, savings and emissions, renewable energy sources, and power plant processes.

Do you want to develop and apply clean and effective energy technologies that will change the world? Join our Master’s program and you will learn how to produce energy safely, economically and using low-emission technology, as well as utilizing renewable energy sources

After graduating, you will be able to analyse, design and select energy conversion processes for different applications, taking technological, economic, environmental and societal aspects into account.

  • Key facts
Degree: Master of Science in Technology
    Extent of studies: 120 credits
    Duration: 2 academic years
    Studies begin: September
    Language of instruction: English
  • Objective

Green energy and technology is in the core of LUT’s expertise.

After completing this Master’s programme, you will be able to:

    • analyse, design and select energy conversion processes for different applications, taking technological, economical, environmental and societal aspects into account
    • apply and develop mathematical models to solve energy technological problems
    • manage and organize both national and international projects
    • design energy technology related equipment, plants, processes and systems
    • communicate and act in academic and research environments
    • work as specialist in energy technology.
  • Structure

The programme includes core and specialisation studies.

Core studies (20-23 ECTS credits) include courses on technology and society, turbomachinery and steam boilers.

Specialisation studies (100 ECTS credits). Specialisation studies include obligatory and elective studies:

Obligatory specialisation studies (55 ECTS credits) include courses on turbomachinery in renewable energy, maintenance management, energy systems engineering and steam turbines.

Elective specialisation studies (42 ECTS credits) include courses on bioenergy and energy use in the forest industry, turbulence models, computational fluid dynamics, energy economics, renewable energy technology and nuclear power plant engineering.

The Master’s thesis and seminar, 30 ECTS credits, is a part of specialisation studies. The thesis an advanced research project, which requires approximately six months of full-time work. It is completed during the fourth semester of the degree programme.

Double and triple degree studies for LUT degree students

The program also offers students a possibility for double or triple degree studies. Students admitted to the double or triple degree program receive a degree certificate from two or three universities after they have fulfilled the degree requirements of all universities involved.

Students admitted to complete the Master’s degree in this Master’s program at LUT may apply for the double degree programme with the Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnical University or the triple degree program with the Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnical University and Leibniz Universität Hannover.

  • Career opportunities

In the program you will have access to the latest information about the renewable energy sector and how it affects your future career.

You will be trained to work in international, multidisciplinary and multicultural environments.

Careers for Master’s level graduates in energy systems include, for instance, specialist tasks, design and product development, production and operation, management, sales and marketing, research and education, and positions in public authorities and organisations.

You will also be given a firm basis to continue your studies in doctoral programs.
